His work was carried out by his younger son Andrew Bell-Irving, who was president of the Otterhound Club until his untimely death in 2004. he was a terrific supporter and officer of the club.
The Bell-Irving’s, the Dumfriesshire Otter Hunt (together with the Kendal Pack) have been one of the most important and influential factors in the modern otterhound.
Since the inception of the Otter Hound Club, Captain John Bell-Irving had been very involved in order to try to keep the correct make-up or conformation of the otter hound, which he had set out to do many years before. |

The Dumfriesshire Otter Hunt, presided over by Capt John Bell-Irving.
The most noted authority on the otterhound in recent times was Captain John Bell-Irving (now sadly deceased) and his surviving family of Lockerbie in Scotland, Masters of the Dumfriesshire Hunt.
This entirely family owned pack recently celebrated its centenary and will reign in the honoured history of the breed along with the Kendal pack, the only hunts to maintain unbroken lines of pure bred otterhounds for a hundred years. Capt John Bell-Irving enjoyed his connection with the Otterhound Club
