Text Box: Rescue

Rescue has been set-up to re-home otterhounds when their current owner has a change in circumstance and can no longer keep their pet. This can be due to several reasons; divorce, sickness, financial difficulties, or bereavement etc.

When buying an Otterhound from a breeder, everyone is asked to sign a contract saying that if for any reason they aren’t able to keep it, it must be returned to the breeder. This prevents hounds from being passed-on to unsuitable homes, because not everyone who is a suitable dog owner, would be a suitable hound owner!

When this isn’t possible, or the breeder cannot take it back, I should be contacted and Otterhound Rescue steps-in.

I co-ordinate a group of volunteers, who are dispersed throughout the U.K.   All are experienced Otterhound owners and ready to help with transporting hounds to be re-homed. .  Distance is never a problem.

We do get calls from Shelters who think they might have an Otterhound, which we always check-out, even if it means someone driving 100 miles.

People shouldn’t consider themselves a failure if they have to put a hound in Rescue.  It is the kindest thing they can do when they get to this stage in their lives, because it is the best thing for the Otterhound in question.

The process is quite simple.........if you get into a situation that you need to place your puppy/dog into rescue, please make sure you always inform your registered breeder (See list) in the first instance.
